Project CARS (Community Assisted Racing Simulator) is exactly what the name says, a racing simulator game whose development has been assisted by a huge community of players. It has been developed and published by Slightly Mad Studios, and distributed by Bandai Namco. Available for PC, Wii U, SteamOS and the next-gen consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The funding of Project CARS has been covered in its totality by the developers and the community.
The weather will be an important factor when it comes to driving
The amazing thing about this release is that, even though they have not relied on the support of great video gaming companies; they are able to face important titles such as Forza Motorsport 5, or even Gran Turismo 6. Of course, it cannot face them in regards to licenses, but it does in regards of graphics, physics, gameplay and all the important things that a racing game should have.
Project CARS is displayed in 1080p, with a frame rate of 60fps. The realism of the physics makes this release absolutely outstanding. The weather, the time of driving, the way you drive the car; everything counts for the grip of the wheels, the use of the steering wheel, and so on. If you crash, your car will not be spotless, it will suffer damage and you will be able to see it in impressive detail. The sounds effects are not lagging behind, you will hear the engines, the wheels on the tracks, the other cars passing you by, etc.
Cars and Gameplay
The gamut of cars that Project CARS offers is very wide, even though it cannot be compared with the amount of cars that the great sagas such as Gran Turismo have. About 50 cars are available to drive, and they are divided into four groups. These groups are Classic cars (Mercedes Benz 300 SEL...), Open-wheel cars (Formula Ford 1600, GP2 cars...), Sport cars (Audi R8, BMW M3, etc.) and Racing Cars (cars of Nascar and GT...). Each car has been designed to be as realistic as possible, keeping within the features of the real life cars.
You will be free to choose the angle you want to see through the cameras. You can use the classic third-person perspective, and also a first-person one. You can also watch the race from the hood, either looking from the road or looking from the inside of the car. There are interior cameras that show a perspective from the steering wheel, other from the bumper, and even from the roof.
The weather will be an important factor when it comes to driving. It will extremely affect the gameplay. If it rains, the grip of the wheels will be less, the height of the sun will affect the visibility, as well as the day/night cycle. For this reason, you have to adapt the way you drive to the current weather on the tracks.
Finally, I just have to mention the online mode, which is one of the major bets of this simulator game. The players will classify by winning races and other data extracted from the competitions. You will be free to play with your friends in a private session, to enter in a public session with people all over the world, or enter by invitation.
